Public Shakespeare Talks: The Mobile Unit, Latinidad, and Shakespeare’s Shortest Play

PUBLIC SHAKESPEARE TALKS: THE MOBILE UNIT, LATINIDAD, AND SHAKESPEARE’S SHORTEST PLAY

Joe's Pub
May 24, 2023

A conversation moderated by Raúl Esparza with Rebecca MartínezJulián Mesri, and cast members of this spring’s bilingual, musical Mobile tour of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

How does Shakespeare “sound” in Spanish? How can Shakespeare talk to a multi-lingual city and world? Join director Rebecca Martínez, composer Julián Mesri, and cast members of this spring’s bilingual, musical Mobile tour of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. The discussion will be moderated by Public Theater alum, Raúl Esparza. Mobile Unit represents The Public’s founding impulses: to bring the finest art to the greatest number of people; to invite the people of New York to participate directly in transforming Shakespeare’s plays and poetry; and to make art that is truly for everyone.

After their tour and before a two-week stay at The Public’s Shiva Theater, the artists will examine the ways the tour went, the new ways the work is reaching everyone, and the ways presenting Shakespeare’s work in multiple languages in a wild diversity of spaces makes new meaning. The event will feature short songs and selections from the play.
