Organizing the Arts Nonprofit: Sharing Strategies Across Disciplines

ORGANIZING THE ARTS NONPROFIT: SHARING STRATEGIES ACROSS DISCIPLINES

July 10, 2023

Organizing the Arts Nonprofit: Sharing Strategies Across Disciplines

The Public Theater and Creatives Rebuild New York artist-in-residence Ife Olujobi invites you to Joe’s Pub on July 10th for Organizing the Arts Nonprofit: Sharing Strategies Across Disciplines. This free 90-minute panel and discussion will feature arts workers, administrators, and organizers Kaitlyn Chandler, Frankie Altamura, Olga Brudastova, and a 4th panelist to be announced, to talk about the surge in white-collar, nonprofit labor organizing in New York City and to speak to their personal experiences participating in the unionization of arts institutions like BAM, the New Museum, The Whitney Museum, and more, as well as working for and alongside Local 2110 UAW. This event is a dialogue, not a lecture, so we welcome your thoughts and questions for our panelists. All are welcome to this free discussion, but a reservation is required. For those unable to attend, there will be a recording released at a later date.

Over the past five years, many of New York City’s hallmark arts and educational institutions—from museums to film houses to universities—have undergone a labor revolution that has seen workers choosing to collectively advocate for better pay and working conditions through the forming of unions. This recent wave of labor organizing activity has helped to dispel myths about what kinds of workers can organize and why, demonstrating that nonprofit arts workers deserve fair pay and labor protections just like any other class of worker, and that it is possible to move towards a better future through collective action and solidarity.
