Mama Alto: Transcendent

Mama Alto: Transcendent

February 18, 2024

One of Australia’s finest cabaret artistes, Mama Alto, makes her solo USA debut at Joe’s Pub. Mama Alto is a jazz singer, cabaret artiste and gender transcendent diva. Her liquid velvet voice comes to the fore in stunning and beguiling interpretations that turn already rich material inside-out. Traversing smoky torch songs, sumptuous jazz ballads and luscious vocals, Mama’s repertoire holds both familiar melodies and unexpected morsels. With her soaring voice, exquisite sense of musicality and wondrously statuesque stage presence, Mama Alto continues to establish herself as one of Australia’s pre-eminent interpreters of the art of torch singing. Enigmatic, multifaceted and resplendent, her weaving of song and story, triumph and tragedy, poignancy and pathos make for an unforgettable musical experience.Mama Alto is a jazz singer, cabaret artiste & gender transcendent diva. She is a transgender & queer person of colour, living with disability, who works with the radical potential of storytelling, strength in softness and power in vulnerability. Her solo performances are critically acclaimed & programmed at premiere venues & festivals around Australia, including Melbourne Recital Centre (VIC), Adelaide Cabaret Festival (SA), Festival of Voices (TAS) & more. She has collaborated with legendary figures including burlesque house Finucane & Smith, playwright Declan Greene and visual artist Brook Andrew. She has appeared with performance luminary Taylor Mac - including as an ensemble member in Taylor Mac & Matt Ray’s “Bark of Millions” currently touring the USA - and with Alan Cumming during his tenure as curator of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Mama Alto is also the co-creator of highly acclaimed variety cabaret “Gender Euphoria,” Australia’s largest ever entirely trans & gender diverse main stage production, which sold out as a headline event of Sydney WorldPride 2023. Additionally, she has worked as a writer, playwright, diversity & inclusion specialist, and advocate. Mama Alto has been recognised with awards and fellowships from the Australia Council of the Arts and Creative Victoria.
