Eisa Davis

Eisa Davis

March 22, 2024

You’ve seen Eisa Davis on TV, heard of her play Bulrusher, caught her singing here at Joe’s Pub or maybe in Passing Strange. She has forged a multifaceted artistry on her own terms, but she’s never had a book of her own published. And now it’s here, ANGELA’S MIXTAPE + THE HISTORY OF LIGHT, a volume of two of her plays that together trace her path toward becoming. Music is a main character in the narrative, with her training as a classical pianist, work as a hip hop advocate, and singer of freedom songs at political events all converging in the passionate pop soul songs and music theatre she makes today. With this concert, Eisa sends the book into the world with haunting, energizing original songs from her treasured catalogue. An Obie winner, Pulitzer Prize finalist, Herb Alpert Awardee, Creative Capital grant recipient and USA Fellow, Eisa has maintained a constant presence in the worlds of stage and screen as both a creator and performer. Notable projects include The Essentialisn’t at Jack and Afrofemononomy // Work the Roots at Performance Space New York, music and lyrics for Devil In A Blue Dress by Walter Mosley, the bilingual play Mushroom translated by Georgina Escobar, the series Justified: City Primeval and She’s Gotta Have It, for which she served as producer and/or writer, and roles in The Secret Life of BeesKingsKindredMare of Easttown and The Wire. From her first electronica EP Tinctures featured on Showtime’s “Soul Food,” to her evergreen acoustic album Something Else, her sound evokes an elegant ease that warms winter into spring.Books will be available at this concert courtesy of Kate Kremer and 53rd State Press.
