  • Human Resources Director

    Reporting to the Senior Director of Human Resources, the Director will be a key member of a highly collaborative team of HR professionals and manage at least one person in a full-time capacity. They will bring strategic talent skills, expertise in core human resource functions, a systems building orientation, and a deep commitment to supporting organizations and people in being actively anti-racist. Marketing and Communications

  • Graphic Designer

    Reporting to the Senior Graphic Designer & Photographer, The Public Theater seeks a full-time Graphic Designer to join our in-house team. Brand Studio develops all internal and external materials with The Public’s signature visual identity. Our range of work includes Free Shakespeare in the Park, Joe’s Pub, and a full season of new musicals, plays, events, and programs at The Public’s landmarked six-venue building at Astor Place. The ideal candidate will uphold the visual consistency of the brand, while supporting and contributing to the creation of a variety of materials including print and digital, with a desire for motion. Projects include research and design for show artwork, social media, programs, development materials, signage, advertisements, brochures and booklet, postcards, flyers, motion graphics, merchandise, installations, presentations, and more.

  • Public Works Community Producing Coordinator
  • The Public is seeking a full-time Public Works Community Producing Coordinator who is passionate about community-building, artmaking, and theater producing.  As the Community Producing Coordinator, you will establish, strengthen, and support relationships among our community members. You will provide support to all Public Works productions, from auditions through performances, serving the community partners, community ensemble, community alumni, and artistic teams.

  • Public Works Community/ National Coordinator

    The Public is seeking a full-time Public Works Community/National Coordinator who is passionate about community-building, artmaking, and building the national movement for community-based theater.  As the Public Works Community/ National Coordinator, you will establish, strengthen, and support relationships among our community members and also within the Public Works National Partners & Affiliates. You will provide administrative and logistical support to help foster relationships and support all Public Works programming.

    The Public Theater is seeking a Membership Manager who will oversee the Public Supporter donor program, representing approximately $1.5 million in contributed revenue. As the Membership Manager, you will work to cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors for The Public Theater, focusing on strategies to attract new entry-level prospects and enhance the current level of support.

  • Costume Shop Administrator 

    The Public Theater is seeking a full-time Costume Shop Administrator to work in a dynamic, fast-paced costume shop.  As the Costume Shop Administrator, you will support the day-to-day operation of the department and serve as the primary contact between the department, vendors, and over-hire employees.  You will provide support to the Costume Director, Costume Shop Manager, and Assistant Manager to coordinate schedules, ordering, and tracking the budget for six venues and numerous overlapping productions.

  • Assistant Technical Director

    The Public Theater seeks a skilled and enthusiastic Assistant Technical Director to join a tight-knit, dynamic team. The Assistant Technical Director will report to the Technical Director and will work closely with other department staff to coordinate the scheduling, budgeting, and construction for multiple shows in 6 theaters. They will work directly with designers, directors, and the rest of the production department to ensure all scenery meets the needs of the design as well as the budget in a safe and efficient manner.
    We expect everyone on our team to have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and an ability to take direction. The environment we work in is always changing, so we need you to be adaptable and able to stay calm under pressure. Reliability, integrity, and strong communication skills are required.

  • Assistant Production Manager

  • Associate Director of Production 

    The Public Theater seeks an Associate Director of Production (Production Management) to join our dedicated, fast-paced Production Department in support of the full range of production activity at The Public. As the Associate Director, you will work with the Production Executive to develop and maintain working practices and organizational systems for the Production Management team.   • Overhire, Scenery Department

    The Scenery Department of The Public Theater is looking for energetic and hard-working carpenters, scenic artists, and run crew to expand its overhire crew list.  We are interested in creating a team with a variety of skills and knowledge and will prioritize enthusiasm, flexibility, reliability, and a willingness to learn above theater experience.  Our typical starting rate is between $25-$27/hr.

    Ideal Specialty Skills:  
    • Scenic Carpenter  
      • Knowledge of standard (wood) construction practices and techniques  
      • Knowledge of job site safety  
      • Ability to read a construction drawing 
      • Proficient in the safe operation of saws, power tools, pneumatics, and hand tools  
      • Comfortable working on ladders, genie lifts, and scaffolding (training will be given)  
      • Able to lift/carry 50lbs   
      • Experience with rigging, automation, welding (MIG), or general metalworking a plus  
    • Scenic Artist  
      • Proficient in the application of paint and other surface treatments (texture, glaze, stain, etc.)  
      • Knowledge of appropriate cleaning techniques for scenic tools (brushes, rollers, trays, sponges, etc.)  
      • Ability to apply highlight and shadow, texture, age, grime, and other faux treatments to various build surfaces, usually wood, metal, or foam.  
      • Knowledge of color theory and color mixing a plus  
      • Experience with foam carving or stretching and painting soft goods a plus  
    • Run Crew  
      • Show Cues may include operating any moving scenic elements, striking or setting Props, or assisting with quick changes or backstage movements 
      • Ensure preset of the stage, including sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping of stage deck and backstage areas  
      • Organizing and ensuring that on-stage and off-stage areas are clean, organized, and “actor safe” at all times
      • Minor repairs and paint touch-ups of the set throughout the run as necessary
      • Continual safety check and upkeep of all moving parts and constructed scenery

Props

  • Props Managers & Assistant Prop Managers

    The Public Theater Prop Department is seeking organized and creative people to expand our list of Prop Managers and Assistant Prop Manager. As a Prop Manager, you will maintain a list of ongoing projects, including delegating and coordinating prop making. You will work closely with departments at The Public to ensure the successful execution of productions.  

    This position is hired based on the duration of a project and is paid an hourly rate. Starting hourly rate is $30

  • Run Crew

    The Public theater Props Department seeks motivated and organized individuals to expand our freelancer list for run crew positions.  As a member of the Run Crew, you will participate in scene changes, prop handoffs, and onstage presentation for each production. You will work closely with other members of the Props and Stage Management teams.  

    Run Crew typically works nights and weekends. Starting hourly rate is $25.00

  • Freelancers

    The Props Department is seeking creative and crafty individuals to expand our freelancer list.  We are looking for people who are willing to let their personal and cultural identities and experiences inform their work and help shape the stories we’re telling on stage.   

    Qualifications 

    • Interest or experience in crafting, carpentry, sewing, or other detail-oriented creative pursuits 
    • Desire to learn and collaborate with other creatives 
    • Ability to perform physical tasks such as moving scenic materials and furniture and spending long periods standing up  
    • Previous experience in theater is not required 

      The ideal candidate is an open-minded team player who is excited about making things.

  • Box Office Manager 

    The Public Theater is seeking a Box Office Manager to join the Box Office team. As the Box Office Manager, you will oversee daily operations and activities of The Public Theater Box Offices to optimize ticket sales for events and performances while delivering a customer service experience focused on kindness and accessibility for all. The Box Office Manager executes various administrative duties related to ticket sales and fulfillment, membership and partner acquisition and renewal, special events, accounting, reporting, list generation, and audience analysis. The Box Office Manager maintains staffing plans, policies and administers training programs to encourage the highest level of guest satisfaction.
